A Blissful Rediscovery of Shanghai: My Unforgettable Shuiguo Spa Experience
Since the pandemic began, I hadn't set foot in China. So finally, being able to visit the vibrant city of Shanghai recently was nothing short of exhilarating. As with any form of travel, there's always something new to discover - and this time, my unexpected discovery came in the form of a unique and indulgent Shanghai Wellness experience: the famous Shuiguo Spa.
What is Shuiguo Spa?
Shuiguo Spa is not your typical spa and sauna facility. It's a full-blown urban wellness and entertainment complex that caters to every kind of visitor - whether you're looking to relax, play, socialize, or just escape the daily grind. Known locally as a "fruit spa", this spot is overflowing with fresh fruits, snacks, drinks and a buffet of relaxing fun activities that stretch far beyond massages and steam rooms.
From KTV Karaoke booths, Mahjong game rooms, arcade games, a cozy library lounge, movie viewing areas to bar counters with local board games, Shuiguo Spa truly has it all. It's a full-day experience perfect for families, friends, colleagues or even solo travelers who want to indulge in a little self-care.
My First-Time Shuiguo Spa Experience
I arrived with no expectations - just curiosity. But what I found was a lively, modern and impeccably clean facility that surprised me in the best way possible. The highlight for me? Definitely the 1-hour foot massage that worked wonders on my tired feet, followed by relaxing in one of their capsule beds. These little cocoons of comfort are perfect for napping, reading or simply zoning out with your thoughts. It's wellness with a touch of novelty and plenty of creature comforts.
Overflowing Indulgences
If you're a foodie, you'll be thrilled to know that Shuiguo Spa offers free-flowing fruits, ice cream, desserts and drinks - including generous servings of durian, the beloved (and divisive) King of fruits. While the main meals are ordered separately, there's no shortage of tasty treats to keep you satisfied throughout your stay.
Tips and What to Expect
Here are a few helpful things to know before you go:
- In-house clothing is mandatory. Expect to change into provided spa wear.
- Public nudity in changing areas is common. Some guests undress in the open area, while others (like me) prefer using the toilet cubicles for privacy.
- Plan your visit wisely. Some services like massages require reservations, so map out your preferred activities ahead of time.
- Family-friendly, but with a caveat. Kids are welcome, but the public nudity aspect might be a concern for more conservative families. Ideal for teens and adults to fully enjoy the experience.
The staff are welcoming, the environment is safe, and the facilities are modern and well-kept. It's the kind of place where you can easily spend hours without realizing how much time has passed.
Ending the Day with a Seafood Feast at Wandao
To cap off our relaxing day, we headed over to Wandao on Shenchang Road just a short walk from Shuiguo Spa - a Japanese Seafood Buffet that's nothing short of spectacular. Imagine limitless servings of snow crab, abalone, prawns, assorted fish, sushi & sashimi, scallops, caviar and many more Japanese dishes.
It's a luxurious seafood feast that truly felt like indulgence on steroids - an overwhelming but welcome finale to a day of pampering and play. In China, everything is done with abundance, especially when it comes to food, and this was no exception.
Self-Care, Shanghai Style
This trip reminded me that life doesn't have to be a constant hustle. A little pause, some self-care, and good food can go a long way in recharging both body and spirit. Visiting Shuiguo Spa in Shanghai offered me exactly that - a refreshing reset I didn't know I needed.
Whether you're a local looking for a weekend escape or a traveler craving something different, this is one Shanghai Wellness experience you shouldn't miss. Relax, reset and recharge - Shanghai style!
