When people ask me about my most surprising and endearing travel experiences, Sri Lanka is one of the first places that comes to mind. This small island nation, just off the southern tip of India, is a land of contrast and character - raw, soulful, and remarkably forward-looking.

From the very beginning, what struck me most was the kindness of the people. Whether in the heart of Colombo or a coastal village, I encountered nothing but warmth and sincerity. Locals were quick to offer help, smiles came easily, and conversations felt genuinely heartfelt. Generosity isn’t forced; it’s part of daily life.

The capital, Colombo, is a fascinating blend of the old and the new. Colonial-era buildings stand beside trendy cafés and high-rises. Bustling markets buzz with life, while tree-lined streets still echo a quieter past. Colombo is a city with soul - deeply rooted in history, yet undeniably moving forward.
Staying at Mount Lavinia Hotel: Beautiful and… Unsettling
I stayed at the historic Mount Lavinia Hotel, perched above the sea in a dramatic colonial setting. It’s one of the most scenic hotels I’ve ever visited - but I must say also one of the eeriest.
The property carries a long, complicated history - from British colonial rule to wartime whispers. Once the residence of a British governor, it holds stories of wartime secrets, whispered romances, and ghostly ambiance. I stayed in one of the ocean view rooms - and while I wouldn't call myself superstitious, I can't deny the haunting atmosphere that seemed to settle in after dark. There’s a stillness, a lingering presence, and honestly, it made for one of the most intriguing yet unsettling hotel experiences I’ve ever had. There’s a feeling of something unresolved in the air. There’s an almost haunted energy that’s hard to ignore. It’s intriguing, but I’d be lying if I said I felt totally comfortable. Still, the view at sunset? Unforgettable.
Sri Lankan Food: Bold, Spicy, and Full of Soul
Food in Sri Lanka is a culinary adventure. If you're a food traveler, Sri Lanka is a dream - especially if seafood is your thing. Every meal feels alive with spices, fresh herbs, and bold textures.
