Tucked between mountains and a glistening lake, Lucerne welcomed us with misty skies but that only added to its mysterious allure. Even though the weather was rainy and gray, the city's charm broke through effortlessly. Lucerne blends natural beauty, rich history, and a peaceful, almost fairytale-like vibe - making it, in my opinion even more captivating than Zurich.
If you're planning a trip to Switzerland, don't skip this lakeside gem. Here's what made our visit to Lucerne truly memorable:
Things to Do in Lucerne
1. Marvel at the Church of St. Leodegar (Hofkirche)
We started our exploration at the church of St. Leodegar, famously known for its striking twin spires. It's not just an architectural masterpiece, it's a serene, spiritual place that reflects the deep religious roots at the region. Even on a gloomy day, the church stood majestically against the misty backdrop.
2. Paying Respects at the Lion Monument
The Lion Monument (Lowendenkmal) is one of Lucerne's most famous landmarks. Carved into a sandstone rock, this poignant sculpture commemorates the Swiss Guards who died during the French Revolution. It's incredibly moving in person - a must-see stop for anyone visiting the city.
3. Strolling the Iconic Chapel Bridge (Kapell Brücke)
No visit to Lucerne is complete without a walk across the Chapel Bridge, Switzerland's oldest wooden covered bridge. The combination of its painted interior panels, the adjacent Water Tower, and the calm Reuss River created a postcard perfect view - even in the drizzle. This was one of my favorite moments, just soaking in the peacefulness and snapping photos of the water reflections.
4. Shopping for Authentic Swiss Souvenirs
Lucerne turned out to be the perfect place for souvenir shopping. We picked up a classic Swiss Army Knife, some fridge magnets, and a cool Swiss-themed shirts. The shops in the Old Town were charming and offered a good variety of keepsakes - not too touristy, but just right.
5. Wandering the Historic Old Town
We spent a good chunk of our time exploring Lucerne's Old Town, with its cobblestone alleys, colorful frescoed buildings, and lively squares. It's a living museum, full of stories and character. Even under the umbrella, it felt magical, as the rain added a cozy layer to the experience.
What We Missed: Mount Pilatus
Unfortunately, due to the unfavorable weather, we had to cancel our planned Mt. Pilatus excursion. It's one of Lucerne's top-rated attractions, offering panoramic views and the world's steepest cogwheel railway. But hey - that just gives us a reason to return!
Scenic Train Ride from Zurich to Lucerne
The journey itself was a highlight. The train ride from Zurich to Lucerne was smooth, efficient, and jaw-droppingly scenic. Rolling green hills, mirror-like lakes, and charming villages flew past our window - a classic Swiss experience that made the travel time fly by.
Why Lucerne Should Be on Your Swiss Itinerary
Lucerne may not have welcomed us with sunshine, but it definitely warmed our hearts. Between the waterscape, historical landmarks, and peaceful vibes, it's a city that captures both the soul and the senses. If you're building your Switzerland itinerary, make sure to include Lucerne - even if it's just for a day trip. And who knows? You might fall for its charm just like we did.
