Antwerp Travel Diaries: A Winter Stroll Through Belgium's Underrated City

If you're looking for a European city that balances elegance with ease, Antwerp might just surprise you. Often overshadowed by Brussels or Bruges, this Belgian city offers its own distinct character, especially in the winter. When I visited, Antwerp greeted me with snowflakes, wet cobblestones, gothic towers, and a calm atmosphere that felt more personal than touristy.

It's known as the diamond capital of the world, but Antwerp shines in more ways than one through its art, architecture, fashion and that unmistakable Belgian spirit of good food and great beer.

First Impressions: A City That Surprises You

The moment I stepped into Antwerpen Centraal, I knew this city had something special. One of the most breathtaking train stations I've seen, it perfectly sets the tone for what Antwerp has to offer -  a fusion of grandeur, history, and quiet charm.

More Than Just Diamonds

While Antwerp is famed for its world-class diamond district, there's so much more to explore:
  • Art & Culture: From classic Flemish paintings to contemporary design, the city's creative soul is alive and thriving.
  • Fashion Forward: Antwerp is home to some of the most innovative fashion houses in Europe - a paradise for style seekers.
  • Chocolate & Beer: Belgian treats are best enjoyed in one of the many cozy cafes dotted around the city.

Must Visit Attractions in Antwerp

Whether you're in for sightseeing or a casual wander, here are some iconic spots that stood out during my journey:
  • Cathedral of Our Lady - a gothic masterpiece that towers over the old town, home to art by Rubens.

  • Grote Markt & Brabo Fountain - the heart of the city with striking guildhalls and a fascinating legend behind the fountain.

  • Het Steen - a medieval fortress on the banks of Scheldt River.

  • Groenplaats - a lively square surrounded by bars, restaurants and views of the Cathedral

  • Standspark - a serene green escape in the middle of the city, perfect for a winter stroll.

Getting Around

Despite the winter chill, exploring Antwerp was easy. The tram network makes the city highly navigable, and the compact layout means many attractions are within walking distance.

Cozy Cafes & Culinary Delights

One of my favorite parts of the trip? Discovering Antwerp's vibrant food scene. From hearty Belgian dishes to Artisanal coffee shops, every corner seems to hide a culinary gem. Don't leave without trying Belgian waffles generously drizzled with Belgian Chocolate and pair with local craft beer if you're an alcohol connoisseur.

A Cozy Escape Wrapped in Culture

Antwerp in the snow is like stepping into a fairy tale. It's not just the diamonds that sparkle, it's the warmth of the city, the richness of its history, and the creative pulse running through its streets. Whether you're a history buff, an art lover, a foodie, or simply seeking a laid-back European city, Antwerp should be on your radar.
